We have all seen those wildly popular beauty tricks and tutorials on the Internet. Some of them actually seem to be very effective, yet others leave you speechless and thinking that you’d never try them yourself. We at Sharegoodidea wanted to find out if some of these tips really work or not. So here’s what we did.
We picked out the top 10 well-known beauty hacks and asked our author Diana to test them.
The tutorial says that you’ll get longer and thicker eyelashes if you dust some baby powder over them before using your mascara.
My eyelashes really did get volume and length, maybe even too much because some of them stuck together. Maybe if you use a clean lash comb to brush and separate your eyelashes, the above-mentioned method of getting a dramatic look will work fine.
1. A layer of cornstarch will mattify your shiny lipstick.
The tutorial suggests we apply a coat of lipstick, and then pat some cornstarch on. In spite of my quite pessimistic expectations, I got the matte effect we were looking for. However, it didn’t feel good on my lips – I could still feel the grainy texture, and it tasted strange too. I wouldn’t use this method on an everyday basis for my beauty routine, yet it might be useful if you’re having a photo shoot, I suppose.
2. Use some Scotch tape when applying eyeliner and shadows.
Roman, our photographer, suggested that I should place some tape on my hand first so that I could avoid irritation and take off the tape more easily. And, I admit, it was a great piece of advice. With the Scotch tape trick, I applied the eyeshadows quickly and achieved a sharp edge. I think it’ll get better with practice. Result: I can recommend this method and will probably use it myself.
3. Use men’s sensitive aftershave balm as a makeup primer.
Even those beauty experts who have millions of followers on their blogs went crazy about using one popular brand of men’s aftershave balm as a makeup primer. I applied some aftershave balm on one half of my face, a makeup primer on the other half, and a light coat of foundation on my whole face. To tell the truth, I didn’t notice any difference at first, but the balm did smell like alcohol and it came in a bottle without a pump so it was hard to dispense the liquid.
We photographed my makeup after five hours in the office and quite a long walk that involved excessive sun exposure. Both sides of my face looked almost the same, yet the balm side was a little bit more oily. I’m not going to recommend this trick because I’m not sure how aftershave and primer affect our skin. It looks okay, but if aftershave balm works almost as effectively as a primer, maybe we can apply any face cream or moisturizer before we use foundation?
4. You can turn an eye pencil into a liquid eyeliner if you hold it over a flame.
Forget about precise and thin lines with this method! The pencil I used melted really quickly, and the lines it drew got thicker. Totally not worth it, from my point of view.
5. Mix your nail polish with cornstarch and you’ll get a matte nail polish.
I mixed some nail polish with cornstarch, and the result I got wasn’t that pretty. My nails were covered with some grainy solution, not even close to what we call a matte nail polish. I think I can still see those microgranules of cornstarch. I don’t think I’ll ever use the tip, and I don’t recommend it to you either.
6. If you stir eyeshadow and nail polish together, you can get a new color.
We just scraped some eyeshadow onto a plate and stirred in some clear polish. The main problem was stirring the ingredients together until the nail polish dried completely. As a result, we couldn’t get the right texture and there were a lot of specks left. I’ll admit, we used cheap glitter eyeshadow, so the color we got turned out to be a disaster. However, I believe that you can get more decent results if you experiment with different colors. Also, it might be a good idea to use a whole bottle of polish.
7. You can get a perfectly straight line with a piece of Scotch tape.
It sounds like something really easy to do, doesn’t it? Place a piece of tape on your nail, paint, remove the tape – and there you go! A perfect line. Well, I can assure you – it’s not that easy. I’ve tried this trick again and again, but no luck. Perhaps I did something wrong, so I’m leaving a question mark on this trick.
8. Use a couple of bobby pins to make your ponytail look better.
Definitely not worth it. No matter which side up or down, those bobby pins hurt my head so badly that I couldn’t stop thinking of them. Who on earth came up with this tip?
9. If you braid wet hair and blow dry it, you’ll get wavy hair.
I have wavy hair, so to test this trick I had to straighten some of it first. I braided my wet hair and followed the instructions. The photo shows that my natural wavy hair looks way better. The braids didn’t turn into cool waves, and I ended up with dry straw-like hair.
Bonus: shaving secret hacks
1. Shave downward, then upward. It’ll prevent razor bumps and burns.
2. Shave after showering to minimize skin irritation. The steam opens up your pores so you can shave easily.
3. Use hair conditioner instead of shaving cream if you’ve run out.
